When we say type of control, we will refer to the method in which the system downhole is controlled from the surface.

  1. The most common method to control an Intelligent Completion is Direct Hydraulics, which uses a direct communication from the surface to the downhole devices by means of control lines (also called capillary tubes).
  2. Another method for control is Direct Electric, with electric cable, very similar to the deployment of ESP (Electrosubmersible Pumps).
  3. A combination of both methods called Electro-Hydraulic, which uses the hydraulic control lines and fluid to produce the main force needed by the downhole interval valves, and electric lines or I-Wire, to power a secondary command module that will divert the hydraulic force to the desired position. One example of this type of system is the WellDynamics SCRAMS.
  4. Other method of control is the Binary Hydraulics. This method is also known by the name of Digital Hydraulics.
